J. A. Russell Ltd Poker Run 2016

On Sunday 13th March 2016 we held our annual J. A. Russell Ltd Poker Run.

With 47 vehicles registered and perfect driving weather, by 9.30am our Boston Road car park was almost at full capacity with old, new, vintage, classic, muscle cars and bikes.

Once everyone grabbed a coffee and had finished admiring everyone’s prized possessions, it was time for BJ’s drivers briefing.  After instructions on how to follow the pace notes to the various secret locations, it was time to hit the road!

This year we headed to the southern parts of Auckland stopping first at our Manukau branch, Papakura, Pukekohe then up to Pukekohe Hill for an amazing view before heading to our mystery destination at the Pukekohe Raceway.  The Auckland Car Club were also having a race day so while we enjoyed a BBQ and packed picnics, you could hear the sound of cars screaming down the back straight.  It was the perfect atmosphere.

To the excitement of our participants, they were given the opportunity to take their vehicles onto the raceway for a few laps where they could really test out their need for speed!  After signing their lives away, those on motorbikes raced first followed by a fast group which required helmets by all in the vehicles. The third group consisted of those wanting to go no faster than the normal road limit of 100km and included Bernie the Variety Club Fire Engine who didn’t hold back on the track.  The final group with their helmets were wanting to burn some rubber with cars apparently reaching over 200km per hour.

Each year all funds raised go towards our two chosen charities The Mike Bakker Foundation and the Variety Club. This year we fundraised a total of $2149.00. Roger Spooner has kindly matched this amount which means each charity will receive $2149.00 which we know will go to good use.

Events like these wouldn’t be possible without a support team so we’d like to thank the branches and their staff who were our Check Points. We also had a “Pit Crew” who worked tirelessly throughout the whole day to help things run smoothly.  Thank you all for volunteering your time to help on the day.  We need to thank and acknowledge John Hume from the Pukekohe Raceway who organised and accommodated our group during their busy day. We know all those who went on the track had loads of fun. Again thank you Roger Spooner for your generous donation and finally to all those who registered and participated on the day.  We hope you all enjoyed yourselves. We’re greatful for the funds we were able to raise and look forward to seeing you all at next year’s event.

Kind regards,

BJ & Sherilyn
